Letter to the Chiefs / Volume 3.3

Dear 107 Staff,

We can all agree that the “How to be ASFM” article could have been published in many other ways, which could have prevented the unfortunate aftermath and misunderstandings. Yet there is a very valuable element that was overlooked, which is your ability to identify and question what is happening around you. To provoke thought and reflection of an uncomfortable truth you personally face is a very brave endeavor.

Courage is a value that is highly esteemed, particularly because it is what determines the course of history. People like Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, and, more recently, Greta Thunberg are considered courageous for the actions they took in order to achieve change.

Looking more closely, we can recognize that their courage is guided with prudence and temperance. Being able to take the time to think of the possible outcomes, both positive and negative, and being able to discern the best course of action is what makes them stand out in history.

Today we live in a world where social media outlets give the opportunity to every human-being to raise their voice, giving them the power to set the tone of their culture and community. You are the future of this country, and with that comes the power to be a force for positive change.

My hope is that ASFM students will instill hope and inspiration in their community, and model the kind of leadership this country, and world, so sorely needs.

Se feliz,
Ms Sánchez
