Smiles @ Miles
An endless wave of runners down Valle Poniente was a sight many students, parents, and teachers encountered during one of ASFM’s biggest charity events.
Miles for Smiles was a complete success, having over 11 hundred racers running for a common cause. All funds of the race are completely devoted to Operation Smile to pay for Harelip operations, and seeing as the event sold over 1300 tickets, 330 thousand pesos will be donated. The event that place on February 25, 2018 at ASFM and Valle Poniente was complemented with a performance by Luisa Vox, a student and local aspiring singer.
ASFM teacher Guillermo Aguilar ran both the 5k and 10k races and managed to change outfits, both with matching bandanas, between them. The Socials Studies teacher managed to place 3rd in 10k and 2nd in 5k. Other school representatives include: Sara Golinvaux, 2nd in women’s 10k, Shannon White, getting 3rd in women’s 10k, Carlos Ruiz, 1st in men’s 5k and Beatriz Barrera, 2nd in women’s 5k.
Unlike other years, the 2k race was no longer a competition, which promoted family bonding instead of a sense of rivalry between the participants. Juan Pablo García, M4S president, said that this year the race was modernized with electronic tickets, giveaways and constant social media presence.
Alana Montemayor, Bach I student and 5k runner said, “M4S was a total success, I really enjoyed running for a cause and seeing others do the same.”
The competition was tough; Valle Poniente’s famous hills made it harder for runners with a total height displacement of around 122 m from the highest point of the race to the lowest.
