Volume 2.9 | Letter to the Editor

Five weeks have passed since the original publication of El Canal 107’s investigative report on the cafeteria: Blue-Gate. On behalf of the Canal and the whole 107 team, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all the students, teachers, and parents who showed interest in this investigation and would like to especially thank the high school administration for their time and patience during this whole process.

Many repercussions emerged as a result of Blue-Gate’s publication, some of which we did not foresee; thus leading to a joint decision with Admin of what we expected to be a temporary shutdown of the first two episodes and the postponement of the second half of this docuseries. After Spring Break, several meetings took place with authorities of the school. In short, we were made aware of various unintentional mishaps that could have shown bias towards certain parties involved. We want to clarify that our purpose was never to hurt, attack, or target any one person or institution but instead, paint a well-rounded picture of ASFM’s cafeteria and explain our current situation in the most objective way possible.

We were also asked to consider altering or deleting multiple features of the remaining videos, creating a new product that did not necessarily adhere to our original vision. Although it meant leaving months of work without being published, we decided not to pursue this issue any further.

The impending end of Blue Leaf’s contract with ASFM marks the beginning of a bidding process for the next cafeteria that is currently underway. We trust that the correct actions are being taken to help improve our lunch experience. We would also like to emphasize the importance of student, teacher, and parent voices and encourage the constant pursuit of improvement in our community.

We have learned many lessons in our the two years of publishing El Ciento Siete, one of the most important ones being the impact that student voice can have in our community. We encourage the constant pursuit of improvement in ASFM in the most ethical way possible, as we always have strived to do since the beginning of this magazine’s publication.
