This year, voting for the next student council will take on a new process. As the current planilla promised, Neon created the IEE (Instituto Estudiantil Electoral), a group of students who will oversee the election process to make them honest and fair.

According to Student Council president, Viola Hernández, she reached out to Luis Elizondo about making him the main judge for the jury. She explained how she made her decision, “I know he is very interested in politics, he knows how IEE works in real life, and he is always up to date with all debates. He is honest, and would never lean on someone’s side for convenience.”

One of the requirements that is needed is for the student to have had no involvement with student council in their high school career. Along with that, it is also important the student has a respected reputation in between their peers.

Once he agreed to take control over this position he was given instructions to chose the next three members of the jury. After considering several peers in his grade, he chose Carla Grobien, Wicho Zambrano, and Claudia Elizondo. None of these seniors had been involved in any student council, making their opinions impartial.

Teachers that are also involved in the IEE system are Ms. Analu González and HS principal Ms. Lamadrid. The entire group (teachers and students) make surveys that are sent to teachers that serve to make decisions in the running, manage the elections during Running Week, and send out the proposal survey that decides the three final planillas that will run.

Elizondo explained that on election day students will still be given one vote, but instead of a survey, it will be a physical ballot to place in a box. Students will get to see IEE more in lunch through debates, and on election day because they will be in charge of counting the votes.
