Mystery from the Past

Almost 10 years after being taken down from the Missouri campus, the iconic mosaic mural has a new home at the Huasteca Campus. Aside from the nostalgia felt during the unveiling on October 13th, this scene also brought many questions, like what do the images in the painting actually represent?

According to the ASFM Communications Department, nobody is absolutely certain of the meaning of the symbols in the mural, since it was designed about ten years before it was built. The actual construction took place from 1968 to 1970.

The designer of the piece, renowned archi- tect and founder of the UANL’s architecture department, Joaquín Mora, died in 1966 and didn't get a chance to actually see the finished product. Accord- ing to Marcela de la Garza Evia, coordinator of this project and the alumni department, he was the only person who knew what every symbol represented, such as the shovel and pickaxe on the right-hand side. The hidden meanings behind each aspect of the mural unfortunately died with him.

Ms. Ana Luisa Martínez, class of 1980, shared that she put up shards of the mural, but does not remember which piece they belonged to. Former student and current teacher, Bárbara Belden, stated that for her, the mural symbolized the beginning of school, seeing as that was the place where everyone waited for the first bell to ring.
