Take A Stand
Feminism, anti-bullying and equality are some of the things that students from ASFM believe in.
Service is the calling of 9th grader Ana Cordelia Préstamo. “Every person, old and young, should contribute in their own way to strengthen both their home and the world.” She observes how easy it is for society to ignore the needs of others, and thinks there can never be too much good in this world.
“En el mundo, no todos tenemos que ser iguales para ser valiosos.” 11th grader Fernando López, along with his 8th grade sister Vero, strongly opposes bullying. Both founded a project called ‘Proyecto Altavoz’ dedicated to encouraging equality. The campaign won honorable mention in Niños en Acción’s entrepreneurial contest. Today, the siblings give conferences in schools such as Colegio Inglés to promote their fight against bullying.
Fernanda Garza Lagüera, grade 10, opposes the school’s dress code. The sophomore mentioned a friend who came to school wearing a shoulder-baring blouse and got in trouble for it. Fer believes it unfair for women to be punished for dressing in a way that “will distract boys from doing their work.” She feels some teachers “value men’s education more than women’s when they make girls miss class to go change just so that boys don't get distracted.”
