Violicía
Nine women are murdered in Mexico every day- simply for being female. This has been dubbed femicide. On Friday, August 16, Mexico City came to a standstill and watches as feminist protesters marched down Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma and crowded around “El Angel de la Independencia”, the Angel of Independence. After the case of a 17-year-old’s rape done by 4 police officers in the country’s capital; Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s mayor, announced there would be “no fabrication of suspects”, as stated by Sheinbaum. This caused outrage, therefore women (and even some men) took to the streets to voice their concerns. This initiated what is now known as the Revolución Diamantina (Glitter Revolution). The movement earned this name after showering Mexico City’s security chief, Jesús Orta, with pink glitter in the inaugural demonstration on August 12. The violence went past the glitter, when reporter Juan Manuel Jimenez was knocked out after getting hit by a man in the jaw. After getting punched, the reporter is seemingly passed out on the ground. An angry group of women then chased after the attacker (now identified as Luis Ángel N. (a.k.a. “El Chupas Estrada”)) and spray painted him with pink spray, glitter bombed him, and yelled at Luis Angel to leave. A theory has actually been fabricated that he was ordered to do this by another man.
