Trump the Greatest Showman

Act 1:

“We have created 2.4 million new jobs.”

“African-American unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded.”

“The stock market has smashed one record after another.”

“The biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history.”

“This will be the last time you ever file under the old broken system.”

“The era of economic surrender is over.”

Act 2: Republicans equalling half of the room stand and applaud.

Act 3: Democrats, the other half of the room, remain silent and unresponsive to these remarks.

What is the name of the play? Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address before congress, the “most watched” in history according to the man himself.

The current President of the United States officially spoke to his country this past January 27 and brilliantly conveyed a sense of patriotism, leadership, and wonderful stagecraft, to present himself as a unifying individual for his people.

One thing made clear in his speech was that “America comes first”. Trump stated that this was a “new” movement and that there has never been a better time to start living the American dream. Economic reforms and tax cuts have resulted fruitful to all social classes. But how much of this is actually his doing? It is too early to see what effects Trump’s administration has had on the economy, so I wouldn’t be ringing any bells just yet.

Anyone who saw the SOTU might have noticed that every time the President said something, anything at all, half of the room would stand, applaud, cheer, and roar, while the other remained quiet. Democrats were either looking at their phones or deadly staring at the orange-tanned face before them. Evidently, Republicans accredit Trump for much more than what he deserves, but their counterparty undermines him a little too much. It seemed that even if he were to prove dark matter exists with a genius mathematical theorem, he would still get no reaction from the liberals and minorities in Congress.

Overall, I have mixed feelings regarding the State of the Union. Although it is most likely that the President did not write that speech by himself (if at all), we did see a glimpse of political correctness from him, something unusual through his short career. The whole show that he mounted, pulled off. Seeing a North Korean defector, a patriotic 12 year-old boy, and success stories of small business owners, all contributed to the image and the brand that is now Donald Trump. He truly “seized his moment” and whether he will win the reelection, become less of a bigot, or display a more political facette on Twitter, Donald Trump delivered a speech that made supporters more supportive, and doubters more doubtful.
