Looking for something to do in Semana Santa, ASFM students found Fortnite, and they haven’t been able to stop since.
The video game reached a record breaking 3.4 million people simultaneously playing on February 8, according to a PC Games News report.
The most popular mode is Battle Royale (think Hunger Games), a survival game that can be played with 1, 2, or 4 players. Each assault starts with a maximum of 100 players who are dropped on a island where they loot weapons to take down other rivals until there is one person/team left standing.
This app has an abnormal sales strategy: It’s free. They profit from in-game cosmetics purchases like skins, emotes (dances), harvesting tools, and backpacks. Non-intuitively, it’s making more money than its competitor PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds that goes for $29.99.
Dave Thier in a Forbes magazine article reported that as of the second month of 2018, the free-to-play Fortnite had reached $126 million in total revenue, compared to PUBG’s $103 million.
Ninja, the world´s most iconic player, with 10.4 million YouTube subscribers, remarked “The fact that it is free is huge...The accessibility and how friendly the game is; really they're just hitting every single mark perfectly.”
The worldwide played video game is available on all major consoles, PC and on mobile phones that run IOS 11.
