Marigolds for Matías

Former ASFM student Matías Cáceres, son of school psychologist Mónica Acosta, passed away on March 12, 2017 at the age of five; to honor his life, 9th graders created an altar de muertos in the MSHS Campus

A team lead by Mariana Guzmán, José Pablo Santos and Juan Sandoval collaborated with Ms. Acosta to make him an altar in the main hallway. “We contacted Matías’s parents about the idea, and they loved it,” Mariana said. “They lent us several of his shoes, toys, photos, and clothing that represented a lot about Matias’s personality and the amazing person he was.”

From October 31 to November 2, Mexico celebrates Day of the Dead to honor deceased friends and family.
This is the first time in recent years the altar de muertos has been made for a person close to ASFM. Before, it had been erected for figures like Cantinflas, María Félix and Chespirito.

The monument had such an impact on the community, that many people couldn’t help shedding a tear when they admired it.
