Corruption's Roots

Message delivered.

Approximately 25 ASFM high schoolers alongside students from other institutions and some adults from all over the city shared their concerns for the environment on March 15th.

After nearly two hours of voicing their thoughts, the protesters walked to the Congress building to speak with Nuevo León’s deputies. Upon arrival, they were greeted and congratulated by these politicians for their efforts regarding this global issue. 12th graders Mariangela Alejandro, Tania de la Garza, and Odette Diguero proceeded to ask the deputies about their plans to reduce the levels of contamination. But their efforts were short-lived since the members of Congress did not answer any of their questions.

Mariangela Alejandro described her experience with the deputies as one that left her dissatisfied. “They weren’t willing to admit that factories find loopholes in the system to avoid regulations. They played the citizenship card, arguing that it’s up to us to report what we see, but how can we if we have not received the training their inspectors supposedly have?”

Tania de la Garza said she asked the congressmen about the standards companies must meet in terms of CO2 emissions. The deputies avoided answering her question by talking about something completely different.

Mariangela and Tania weren’t the only people disappointed with the incomplete answers they received. None of the protesters could provide examples of straight answers they got from the congressmen because they failed to give them any.
