IMMUNS: Calling All Delegates
Dislocated shoulders, debates, and a furry surprise for MUN advisor, Marissa Aguilar, were a few of the things that IMMUNS delegates got to experience throughout the internationally recognized THIMUN affiliated simulation.
After months of preparation and countless hours invested, their big day caught up to the MUN Secretariat class on the weekend of February 14-16.
Planning an event of this scale is no easy feat. The class is divided into 6 departments with their respective tasks. The Public Relations unit, lead by Emilio Marchand, is in charge of finding guest speakers to entertain and inspire delegates.
The event's highlights include guest speaker Scott Hammell, a world record breaker, who demonstrated how to escape a straightjacket. The stunt included dislocating his shoulders in front of the packed Guillermo Zambrano auditorium. Scott is known for breaking the world record of highest escape from a straightjacket wrapped in chains dangling from a bungee cord upside down tied to a hot air balloon. In the past, the simulation has hosted speakers such as Jane Goodall and Yeonmi Park, a North Korean refugee who managed to escape her government.
The Secretariat class thanked Ms. Aguilar for her mentorship by giving her a puppy named Luna, translated to Moon [MUN] in English (get it?).
Even though the Secretariat class has considered IMMUNS 2019 a success, there were several pressing problems. It all started when a school arrived around three hours early, forcing the Hospitality department to shift their schedule to come out and greet them. The Human Resources and Academia department had to combine committees in order to account for the lack of HS delegates. The PR department had to deal with several changes to their plans when Hammell’s plane was delayed, and they feared he wouldn't arrive on time to present.
Secretary General Claudia Elizondo called IMMUNS 2019 was a great success. “The entire MUN program and Ms. Aguilar shined in this incredible event,” she commented.
Delegates enjoyed enchiladas, gorditas and flautas in a Mexican themed delegate party and an international themed lunch, organized by the Logistics and Recreations department, which featured food from Italy, Argentina, USA, Japan, and Spain.
