Soaring Since ‘28

A person’s 90th birthday is a celebration of a life well lived and a preparation for the end. But as ASFM turns 90, where we’re going is the best part yet.

Where we were:

ASFM was founded in 1928, having the unique quality of being an American styled education in Monterrey. The school relied only on three teachers to educate the 57 students enrolled. No kindergarten or high school was offered, only primary to tenth grade.  The school’s location changed three times until finally building what we know as the Missouri Campus. This would not be possible without the help of a large-scale fundraising financed by believers of the school’s vision. With time, ASFM grew paramountly, in facilities and student body, becoming the innovative institution that it is now.

Where we are going:

“Why would we change, if we have had so much success stories?”

“Because the world is changing…” - Dr Adams.

“I envision the school with different types of high school diplomas.”

Adams explained that different minds deserve different recognition in areas they excel. For example, a math, tech or arts oriented diploma.

“Not everyone learns at the same pace and rate.”

ASFM has just accepted their first down-syndrome student in nursery, and a child with cerebral palsy as well. These are just the first of many students accepted that will challenge this school to modify their teaching system.

“I see exams going to a different direction.”

Some have test fear, some don’t have time for projects. Dr. Adams proposes having options.

“A classroom should be a studio.”

Tangible, applicable, real. Not just the teacher up front lecturing you, copying notes and studying for an exam; that’s old school and doesn't have much proof of retention.

“For high school, I don’t envision a schedule from 8 to 3.”

Dr. Adams thinks high school students should not wait for college to accommodate their schedules to their individual needs.
