Last edition, 11th grader Inés Barcena wrote an opinion piece describing how the ASFM’s bicycle policies prohibited her from riding a bike to school. Almost two months since its publication, it seems that this article was able to speed up the fulfillment of a new rule that solves the writer’s main concern. As of now, any 10th, 11th, or 12th graders will be able to bike to school once their parents sign a form given to them at the MSHS office along with instructions on how the logistics of this method of transportation would work.
The school’s former prohibition of riding bikes to school, according to Ms. Lamadrid, was one mostly motivated by legal reasons and the fact that there was no place to park the bikes. Because most bicycle riders will be minors, she explained, there are certain rules that have to be established before granting them permission. “When we deal with minors and with families, we need to be super careful and we need permissions because if once open the gate and it wasn’t properly done we can get into problems.” These authorizations had to come from the people in charge of security at ASFM, with the approval of the school lawyer. Ms. Lamadrid noted that this was a task that began to be looked into last year, but “it took a long time for the lawyer and the security people to find the safest way.”
Now, anyone from grade 10 and up who wishes to walk or ride their bicycle to school will be able to do so. Designated parking spaces will be located at the admin building, and students can walk down to the Huasteca campus through the newly-built stairs
